Teeth picture for Ted
Chris Laing spotted this giant flying insect whilst we were walking along the Matukituki track in Mount Aspiring National Park. It was around 10 – 12 cm long. I assume it’s a Dragonfly but am not sure – if you can confirm or provide more information about it, please leave a comment below!
I went camping on the weekend with Ed Waite and Dave Patchett to Poolburn reservoir. We headed off on Friday evening packing tents, as much cold weather gear as we could find and a set of chains in the back Ed’s trusty Toyota Landcruiser. The road up to lake Poolburn was nicely frozen and easy […]
I can still feel the sensation of my shoulder popping out every time I watch this. It makes me feel queasy! Quite cool to have caught it on camera though π Thanks to Dave for recording and uploading it π The video was recorded at Poolburn reservoir in New Zealand. The ice was about 15 […]
Some photos of waterfalls in the West Matukituki valley, taken during a tramping trip with Chris Laing on New Years Eve in 2010.
Some views of the Matukituki valley taken during a tramping trip with Chris Laing on New Years eve 2010. Original version of panorama here.
I spent a day packing boxes of lunches for the student volunteer army in Christchurch. We managed to prepare over 17,000 lunches π We in fact prepared so many, that they wouldn’t all fit in the truck being used to transport them to Christchurch, and so Ed Waite and myself carted them up in Ed’s […]
Sushi was missing from the photo, so I added her in, along with everyones favourite star of the day.
Great night out with my new flatmate Sushi, Rose, Jordy and Amy.
During the hour after the earthquake in Christchurch on February 22nd 2011, the major New Zealand news sites were suffering overloading/performance problems, so this post was used to distribute photos until the news network sites became usable again.
An awesome little beach beside the Matukituki river that Chris Laing and I had lunch at on New Years Eve in Mount Aspiring National park.
Chris Laing and I camped at Pearl flat which sits below Mount Aspiring. Since no one else was stupid enough to go camping with the sand flies, we had the whole area to ourselves π The sand flies weren’t a major nuisance and seemed to avoid stinging us so long as we smothered ourselves in […]
Some photos from the face of the Poolburn dam. The ice was very thick right beside the dam face due to the shadow it cast.
Here are some vintage Formula 1 cars from the Te Papa Formula 1 exhibition.
David Patchett and I headed up to Coalpit dam in the Naseby forest for some ice skating. There was excellent ice coverage on one side (100 mm +) but the other half was either very thin or non-existent.
Some photos from the Tasmanian countryside taken in 2007.
David Patchett and I went to Idaburn dam for some ice skating.
Apparently the correct term for ice which looks like glass, is “green ice”. Whilst skating over some incredibly smooth “green ice”, Dave Young decided to poke a hole in it to see how good the visibility was. It then dawned on me that he could attach my ATC2k camera to the end of the pole […]
After Dave Young’s stunning find of ice at the Lower Manorburn dam on August 17th, I decided to do some investigating for the 2011 ice skating season. After feeling a rather large earth quake at 4:38am, I decided to bust a move up to Swampy Summit, about 9 km from my home in Dunedin. I’ve […]
After many, many years of trying, I finally got the chance to skate on the Idaburn dam. Ice quality was average, but very thick at least. Kinda weird skating beside a main highway and underneath giant powerlines. I’m not sure why so many people rave about this place at seemed kinda crappy to skate at. […]
We had an awesome game of hockey after a lot of sweeping to remove the snow for our makeshift rink at Poolburn reservoir. Thanks to Peter Wallis for the photo.
Some photos of me on Poolburn reservoir. Thanks to Dave Patchett for the camera work π
Jaimee Wood, Larry Martin and Krissi Wood joined David Patchett and I at the Lower Manorburn dam.
Anna, Harry and myself road-tripped from Dunedin to Alexandra to do a night skate on the Manorburn dam, then headed to Poolburn reservoir the next morning to skate on mega thick ice at Poolburn reservoir, then finished our journey by travelling through to Lake Tekapo for a hockey tournament between the Killer Keas (our team) […]
The Killer Keas hockey team took to the ice at Poolburn reservoir to brush up their skating skills before heading north to Lake Tekapo. Skating conditions were a little average due to the snow, but there was no shortage of ice (up to 15 cm thick in some parts) and lots of fun to be […]
Some photos showing the beauty of the frozen Poolburn reservoir this winter.
Thanks to Dave Young, Alan Knowles and Dave Patchett for taking me along on their ice skating trip to Central Otago. We had beautiful ice, up to 10 cm thick, at Poolburn Dam. We circumnavigated the entire lake (~20 km), most of which was beautifully smooth near-black ice. There are a lot more photos to […]
More Formula 1 photos. Nigel Mansell’s World Championship winning Williams Renault this time.
A photo of mine from the Heidelberg Castle has been used in the documentary “Louis Pasteur: The Space of life“. The image used is from the chemistry laboratory at the castle and was used as the background for the laboratory of Jean Baptiste Biot, the man who discovered the chiral nature of tartaric acid. As […]
The Killer Keas ice hockey team, bronze medalists in the Dunedin Ice Hockey League Autumn season. Thanks to Jaydee Cabral for providing the photo and Anna Craw for taking it.

Pierre-em and I went 4WD’ing in his mighty Feroza on the weekend. And here’s a short video clip from the end of our journey and back onto a real road!
I’ve been fishing through my families old photo albums and found the following photos of the Manorburn dam from the past that some of you may find interesting.
The following is a panorama I created a long time ago of Toko Mouth. It was originally created with an old film camera of my mum’s and since the film was her’s, she never let me chop them photos up and turn them into the panorama I was trying to create. Scanners weren’t readily available […]
Some more photos from Port Arthur in Hobart, Tasmania taken in 2007. Visit the original Port Arthur post for more photos.
Check out the amazing Storm Trooper tattoo of artist Gene van der Zanden. Thanks to Gene for letting me take a photo of his arm π
I took the following photo from the roof of the Centre for Innovation today. My office is on the ground floor. Original picture is available here.

Some random photos of people at Stu and Lauren McLennan’s wedding in Hobart, Tasmania. Actually, they’re not that random, they just didn’t fit in with the other blog posts I was writing :p
Some soppy lovey dovey pics from the wedding of Stu and Lauren McLennan in Hobart Tasmania.
I have no idea why, but for some strange reason people tend to look at me a bit funny sometimes. Please leave a comment below if you think you might know why … Photos taken at the wedding of Stu and Lauren McLennan in Hobart, Tasmania.
Bode and Susan kidnapped me and dragged me off to the dump, followed by a trip to the local female factory (didn’t find anything that suited my tastes) then took me to Cascade Brewery in Hobart Australia for a beer.
Liz McLennan kindly stuck flowers on us at Stu and Lauren McLennan’s wedding.
