Harriet and I in Tromsø
During a skating expedition in July 2011, we stopped in at Conroy’s dam near Alexandra. There was no ice to be seen, but the lake was a beautiful crystal clear mirror.
Some nice photos I took during the winter of 2011.
What do a bunch of skating crazed idiots do when there isn’t enough ice to safely skate on? … they attempt to skate on it anyway …
Some winter-time photos taken from inside the car whilst travelling around the Maniototo region.
During a skating trip to Poolburn dam in July 2011, Dave Patchett decided there wasn’t enough ice so took a casual dip underneath it instead!!!
Some random photos that I didn’t know where else to put …
We had the biggest snow dump I’ve seen in Dunedin city during 2011. Here are snaps from my camera from that day. Justine and I went to Poppas Pizza’s before going to see some snowboarders and skiers having a lot of fun on the hills.
My new friend Liz took me to her favourite hangout “Unholy” in Oslo. Good time had by all.
The locals told me winter was over and there would be no more snow. Then I awoke to see this outside my bedroom winter … (this happened quite a few weeks ago, just took me a while to post it)
Skating trip to Frogner stadion in Oslo. The ice surface was super smooth, the temperatures were high and there was more ice than you could possibly imagine (for a rink). A complete lack of fitness and having not skated properly in around nine months left me pretty much dead at the end of my skating […]
Whilst staying in Naseby for a hockey tournament, Dave Patchett, myself and Chris Laing walked up in the snow to Hoffman’s dam. The dam was frozen, but not enough to skate on.
Harriet Geoghegan and I headed north to the city of Tromsø in northern Norway. Our goal was to see the northern lights, and we duly did 🙂 At first this seemed unlikely as Tromsø was shrouded in cloud, but our friendly northern lights tour guide drove us most of the way to Finland in an […]
Oslo got darned cold for a while. A good demonstration of how chilly it got is this waterfall which was almost totally frozen over.
Panoramic view of the river which flows beside the Albert Town camping ground. I was visiting Krissi and Jaimee Wood at their camp site. Original panoramic photo can be downloaded here.
Some photos from the harbour at Aker Brygge in Oslo, Norway.
There were some protestors outside the Nobel Peace Center when I wandered on past recently. I have no idea what they were protesting about.
I share an office with my two friends Harry and Barney Ponsonby. They’re quite awesome and keep me entertained when not working. I snapped some photos of them on a walk with their master Shay Ponsonby at lunch time.
People keep asking me what my new apartment in Oslo looks like, so here’s some piccies to keep you happy 🙂
I normally find cemeteries kinda creepy, but there’s something I find very peaceful about them once there’s a nice dump of snow on them. This is one I stumbled across when I got lost walking home from town one day.
Some random shit I’ve seen in Oslo recently.
Chris Laing at the highest point of our trip up to Liverpool hut.
Snapped a photo of a nice bridge near my apartment in Oslo. I often walk over this bridge when taking a detour to the shops.
It’s often hard to see the sun in Oslo, but here is proof it does exist 🙂
Apparently snow is edible! These pigeons were pulling out all sorts of edible delights from within the snow pack. And here I was thinking it was nothing but water! And a bonus photo of a duck 🙂
I went for a wander down the side of the stream near my apartment in Oslo. The sun creeping over the horizon made for a pleasant walk through the snow.
My trusty old Canon S1IS died last year. I’ve been making do with a cruddy piece of junk bottom of the line Canon crapbox since then, so decided that since I’m in an exotic new land and popping shots off constantly that I should upgrade to something better. So today I bought a brand new […]
This is a crazy sculpture thingy sitting in the water beside the Oslo opera house. It turns on it’s axis in line with the tide and wind.
I went for a walk along the stream near my apartment. The river is starting to freeze over. I wasn’t ballsy enough to go stand on it, but it sure does make sure an idyllic view.
I walked down to the Oslo Opera House (“Operahuset” in Norwegian). The walk to the top was slippery as heck. I should have realised it was a bad idea to walk up there when I had to walk past a sign warning not to walk up there and clamber underneath a chain blocking access. But […]
Chris Laing and I saw a huge avalanche come crashing down off the side of Mount Joffre, or at least I think that’s which mountain it was. I don’t know the area well enough to confirm which exact mountain it was, but it somewhere very near at least. We were in Pearl flat a little […]
I went to check out a game of Bandy here in Oslo recently. For those of you who haven’t heard of it before, Bandy is a sport which is similar to field hockey, but played on ice. The rink is huge, as are the goals. There is much less contact than in ice hockey and […]
I went for a walk around Oslo. Here are some snaps from my trip.
I headed to Sognsvann just north of Oslo to go ice skating. It turned out there was way too much snow on the lake for skating, but I had a nice walk around the lake anyway.
Whilst enroute to a new job in Norway, I stopped off in Christchurch to spend New Years with one of my favourite people in the whole world, Cassienne. After a few months of feeling like hell, this was a great way to pep me up before heading on to a new life in Norway. We […]
I’m currently blobbing out at Changi airport in Singapore en route to Norway. This is definitely the most pleasant short-term stopover I’ve ever experienced. The whole airport is just “nice”. Lots of shops, lots of good food, lots of pleasant little indoor garden areas, good transport around the terminals (and between them) and not overly […]
I lived in this apartment longer than anywhere else since I was a child. Not the most luxurious accommodation available but a great landlord, selection of great flatmates and some terrific memories. I took these photos on the day I left in case I want to remember the place many years down the track.
I was broke, so in my attempts to live in Wellington city on the lowest possible budget I resorted to the cheapest backpackers accommodation I could find. NZ$15 per night is enough for a dorm room at “The Lodge in the City”, it isn’t luxury accommodation, but it’s clean enough that you can live there […]
Dr Michael Hewitt Benn died in Calgary, Canada on Wednesday, December 21st at the age of 80. He was one hell of a guy. One of the nicest people I’ve ever met and the best boss anyone could ever ask for. He would do anything for anyone and was the epitome of kindness and generosity. […]
I now have pins holding my shoulder together! You can see them clearly in this X-ray of my shoulder taken on December 15th 2011.
Here are some old photos I dredged up from my time in Cumberland apartments.
I took this Panorama of the Dunedin railway station on my friend Anna’s camera. We were walking around town while I helped her figure out how to use it. The railway station’s a block and a half from my apartment.
For those of you unaware, I had shoulder surgery last week. I recall finding it incredibly amusing watching @ninjalikescheez tweeting immediately following surgery, so I decided to follow suit and risk public embarrassment and shame by doing likewise. Some would call posting your inner thoughts on a public timeline whilst drugged out of your mind […]
I’m currently blobbing out on my bed at Mercy hospital after having a Laterjet procedure performed on m shoulder yesterday morning. I went for a walk earlier and took these photos out the ward windows on my phone.
I had a Laterjet procedure performed on me this morning to correct for extreme instabiliy in my left shoulder. My surgeon Simon McMahon kindly agreed to oranise for someone to take a photo of the internals of my shoulder. If you are squeamish you may not want to see them.
Some photos of the Matukituki river in Aspiring National Park. Taken on New Years eve 2010 while on a tramping trip with Chris Laing.
My first successful attempt at baking bread from scratch. It’s nomalicious 🙂
We made a group trip to the Idaburn dam to find skatable ice. That failed in epic fashion, so we did some team shots including the following super sexy duckface shot! Thanks to Devon Wallace for the photos.
I helped organise a social hockey trip to Naseby this winter. We were greeted with an awesome snowy experience on arriving in Naseby, including snow during one of our games! My should was too munted to play, so I refereed it instead.
Dave Patchett and I headed to the Lower Manorburn dam for some ice skating on July 10th. The ice was a bit thin in some areas, but we found enough to skate on 🙂
